    Updated: March 10, 2023

What are the best energy efficient boilers?

the most energy efficient boilers are Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Vaillant, Navien and Viessmann. You can find more details about these models on this page.

    Most Efficient Boilers:

When choosing a new boiler, efficiency is one of the most important factors to look into. It can help you reduce your energy costs as well as your carbon footprint.

    Energy Efficiency Regulations:

You will save on your energy bills if you have an energy efficient a boiler because you’ll pay less for wasted energy.

In addition, this increased efficiency will also be responsible for reducing your carbon footprint.

    • All new gas boilers installed in UK are required by law to be condensing boiler, since 1st April 2005
    • Since 1st April 2007, the same law applies to oil boilers as well.

Boiler efficiency has become more important than before since all boilers available for sale and installation in the UK need to be condensing

Boiler manufacturers are competing with one another when it comes efficiency, as well as tech and innovation.  They are all trying to utilise innovative and use the latest technologies to increase the efficiency of their appliances in addition to the desirability of their brand.

    Online Boiler Efficiency Guide

On this page, you will take a look in details at the most efficient boilers available in the UK.

But before we look at the different efficiency ratings of different boilers we need to understand what Boiler Efficiency refers to.

    What is boiler efficiency?

The term Boiler efficiency, refers to the percentage of the total energy used by the boiler to provide heating.

    Condensing Boiler Efficiency rating example:

A 90% efficient boiler will use 90% of the supplied energy for heating your home.

    Lost Energy

This means that the remaining 10% of energy would have been lost because of the missing 10% of efficiency.

To clarify, for every £1 you spend on heating your home, only 10p will be wasted.

It must be said though that a 90% efficient boiler is much more efficient than the older non condensing heat-only boilers which are still being used every day in many UK homes.

    Non Condensing Boilers

On the other hand, an older non-condensing boiler could be running at an efficiency rating of around 70% efficiency.

As a result, 30% of the energy you are paying for is being lost and not being used to heat your home.

    Boiler efficiency ratings:

Boilers are rated using an energy efficiency rating scheme from A-G, just like other domestic appliances like freezers, washing machines and fridges.

All new boilers in the UK must be A-rated by law and must conform to Boiler Plus regulations.

You can see the energy efficiency rating scheme below:

    Efficiency RatingEfficiency (%)
    A90% and above
    B86-90%
    C82-86%
    D78-82%
    E74-78%
    F70-74%
    Gbelow 70%

    Boiler Plus regulations

All new oil and gas boilers must be installed with a thermostat and a programme timer, according to the new UK regulations implement in 2018

    Energy Saving Features:

In addition all new combi boilers must include at least one energy-saving feature such as:

A flue gas heat recovery system:

A system that condensing boilers use to recover heat from exhaust gases.

    A load compensating thermostat:

A thermostat that adjusts the temperature of the radiators based on the actual room required to heat.

This thermostat will increase the temperature of your radiators when the room is cold to ensure efficiency.

It will also decrease the temperature of the radiators when the room is reaching the required temperature.

    A Smart Thermostat:

A Smart thermostat is an internet compatible system that gives you the ability to control your heating system remotely.

    Remote Control Programming:

Remote Control Programming enables you to remotely control your heating via a smartphone or tablet.

In addition smart thermostats can include additional smart functionality like voice control, open window detection & geofencing.

These are available in hand held devices and via smart phone apps.

    Weather compensation Auto-Feature:

The automatic Weather compensation feature uses an outside sensor to monitor the outside temperature and regulates your boiler temperature to make sure your home isn’t being unnecessarily heated when it is not required to do so.

Why are condensing boilers more efficient than non-condensing boilers?

By getting a new condensing boiler over an older non-condensing boiler, you will be saving money on your energy bills, in addition to lowering your Carbon footprint.

That’s because condensing boilers work to recover heat that a non-condensing boiler would have lost via the flue.

This is called a flue gas heat recovery system

This system works by recovering heat (mostly hot steam with some acidic content) and recycling it, rather than loosing it like the older non-condensing models used to.

In condensing boilers, the hot flue gases go through a heat exchanger first before exiting through the flue outside.
